Thriller- En Grym Film

I'm currently giving this flick a second chance. I watched it for the first time maybe a year ago, and was less than impressed. Surprisingly, I'm enjoying it quite a bit on the second go around.

A brief synopsis:

The story is about a girl, Frigga (Christina Lindberg), who is sexually assaulted during her childhood and the trauma makes her mute. When she becomes older, she accepts a ride from a man who makes her a heroin addict, and then becomes her pimp. At one point, she is stabbed in the eye (a scene for which the director, to much controversy, used an actual cadaver) for refusing a client. She starts saving up money to buy weapons and take classes in driving, shooting, etc. to finally take revenge.

The film is also controversial for its use of hardcore pornographic material (in other words, sex scenes that depict penetration, instead of simulated sex).

The film is available on DVD from Synapse (FTW!), and looks great as such.


Anyone have any thoughts?

I still haven't seen this! Which is pretty shameful... I'll have to import the Synapse version as the UK release is sure to be cut. UK censors don't like vagina's. I'm guessing it isn't Lindberg in the hardcore inserts?

Wow. I never knew the director used a real corpse for a scene... that's uh disturbing.

Unfortunately, no I don't think it is. That might almost make them worth watching. They're really not interesting, and are quite hairy. I actually even have an interest in "vintage/old/classic" porn, and I still feel that the inserts sort of break up the film, and that the sex scenes would probably be even sexier if the penetration shots were removed.

I agree that the sex shots are unnecessary.

I don't like thinking of Christina as having a hairier ass than my own.

Wish they'd have included the "Vengeance Edition" on the same disc as the uncut. Or at least have it as a 2 disc set.

Hmmm... I can't quite decide whether that comment makes me more interested or if it puts me off.

Nah, I' ve the same view. Like Andy Milligan's films. He cut out some scenes of his movies and inserted long, drawn out sex, for more appeal. These characters really should be clothed[ie Seeds of Sin, The Ghastly Ones]. I feel cheated w/o those lost bits. I guess I should stop here, or I'll go on about Milligan. /end

No, it's not Lindberg in the scenes and yes, they are completely unnecessary. They might bring much more of an exploitation feel to what is otherwise a rather mundane and (all things considered) sanitary product, but they also feel tacked on - which they were - and are, like some have already mentioned, not in anyway erotic or fun to watch.

I've never enjoyed this film all that much (my first time seeing it was back in 1992 on a VHS dub that I picked up at a comic book store) but I will watch anything and anything Lindberg is in. She's just that stunning.

I might be an utter film snob but I love Milligan's work. They might be poorly shot with enough zooms to give Franco motion sickness and utterly unconvincing but they are singularly HIS. No one made films that looked and felt like his. As interesting as it is to view him as merely another HG Lewis-esque horror director, he was also a true innovator in the New Queer cinema movement in the mid to late 1970s (although he is completely forgotten in every university film studies text). While I'm not going to go as far as to say he was in anyway important in the grand scheme of things, he was certainly one of the most interesting filmmakers churning out no-budgeters during the drive-in/grindhouse days.

I thought this belonged more in the revenge film category than sexploit. as it depends really on the version one has and
the plot revolves more around revenge than the hardcore inserts.

and it's so true. I've seen his slasher/sexploitations and The Rats are Coming the Werewolves are Here, but I haven't been able to come across a copy of Vapors. I just wanted to comment on this before you made the thread[if you do].

Meh, they ruined the pacing for me. If I wanted hardcore shots I'd watch porn.

Ive got the xxx version of this on synapse (the red cover) but after all the hype i was given before watching it i was kinda let down when i did watch it. After watching it again i started to enjoy it for what it is and now its one of my faves. The porn inserts are abit shit, reminds me of the BARE BEHIND BARS inserts........or Joe D'Amato's inserts when he was given Tinto Brasse's CALIGULA. But great revenge film...

Don't get your hopes up too high. The action is fairly sparse in reality.

I liked this film a bit more than most I'd say, but as some others have mentioned, there were problems. There were some shots of hairy buttholes that I really didn't need to see. I feel like I'm betraying the part of me that's a pervert, but I think they could have accomplished what they wanted with respect to the hardcore, without having the extreme closeup of the nasty seventies genetals. They could have shown flashes of insertion here and pussylips there, without hovering on the eye-burning shots that they did. I think the director was just trying to over-emphasize how painful One-Eye's ordeal was, but I got the message after the eye-gouge.

All in all, I'm glad I have this in my collection, but it isn't a terribly well-made movie. It's slow in parts where a bit more speed is called for considering the genre, and the tension isn't built in the interims. Also, the camera angles were questionable a great deal of the time and the movie was etxtremely quiet. There was little musical accompaniment, so at times it was far more bleak than I think was intended.

Having gotten all of that out of my system, I liked how utterly unbelievable the hardships that were visited upon One-Eye; the molestation, the kidnapping, the forced drug use, the eye and her parents later (which was absolutely a delicious funeral scene), all of these things. I bet a group of people sat around getting high and thinking of ways to make One-Eye's nightmare even worse, and I appreciate that. Also, the scenes of her sparring with her karate instructors makes me laugh every fucking time - "Take it easy lady!"

Agreed. It would have benefited from a shave of about twenty minutes.
