Venus in Furs (1969)

I know there are probably a TON of Franco haters here. The man doesn't really deserve much love, and I'll be the first to admit that. I'll also, however, be the first to say that two of his movies (Vampyros Lesbos and Venus in Furs) number among my favorite sexploitation movies, ever. I'd really like to focus on Venus in Furs here though for a minute...





Venus in Furs tells the story of a talented young musician who finds a dead body on the beach. The dead body of a beautiful girl, who he actually recognizes from a high society party at which he was a guest. Funny thing is... he begins seeing her, very much alive, in many of the places he goes... Including Rio, a long way from Istanbul, where he finds her body. Defying logic in many ways, he becomes romantically, and sexually involved with her... resulting in a bizarre, and interesting finale.



While Franco is best known for his inept direction, and overuse of the zoom... He is, in his own opinion, and to some degree my opinion, a fairly pure surrealist, which can be seen either as a motivation or an excuse for many of his directorial choices, depending on which side of the line you fall towards. Venus in Furs very much falls into the surreal category, actually creating its own set of symbols, and making wonderful use of its jazzy score (one of the best scores I've ever heard) to an extent most films wouldn't dare. The movie is rhythmic from beginning to end, which is largely, in my opinion, why it is a success.

Oh, and did I mention that Klaus Kinski, everyone's favorite megalomaniac, plays one of the main roles?



If you've never seen a Franco film... see this one. If you HAVE seen a Franco film, and liked it... DEFINITELY see this one. If you hate Franco, but decide to give him another chance... see VENUS IN FURS!
